1. | EVALUATION OF 6238 HUMAN RABIES POSTEXPOSURE PROPHYLAXIS IN KARTAL EDUCATION HOSPITAL İsmihan Kuzu, Nuray Oltan Sahan, Salih Kenan Şahin, Serdar Özer Pages 545 - 548 Rabies prophylaxis was administered to the 6238 people who applied to our station for animal contacts or bites between 1987 and 1993. Males composed 73% (4530) of the cases; females composed 27% (1708) of the cases; people under age of 15 composed 15% (3150). The sources of animal bites are dogs which are 71 %(4458) of the animals, cats which are 19 % (1218), mice which are 8 % (498) and other animals which are 2% (63). Two percent (85) of the cases was included in the vaccine programme because of a likely contact with a rabies animal or person 85 % (5272) of the cases received HDCV, 15 % (966) of the cases received Semple-Type vaccine and 7% (430) of the cases received also antirabies serum (ARS). The application rate in the first 72 hours after the contact was84.5%. The percentage of the adaptation to the planned vaccine programme was 89.7 %. Rabies was determined at the 18 of the 25 animals investigated in the six years. Also, the rabies was detected in 2 cases who received vaccine. According to our results, Kartal and its environment can be accepted as a risky region because there are animal and human rabies cases and the bites of domestic animals are seen frequently. Because of the importance of human life, the indication of prophylaxis was broadened and HDCV, which is generally much more protective and safer, was applied. It is also observed that the people of that region are sensitive enough to this rabies prophylaxis applied to human. |
