The histopathological results of tonsillectomy and adenotonsillectomy specimens: 3-year follow-up results

OBJECTIVE: Tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures, especially in the pediatric age group. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the histopathological results of tonsillectomy and adenotonsillectomy specimens.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of histopathologic reports on all patients in both pediatric and adult age groups undergoing tonsillectomy and adenotonsillectomy in our clinic over a three–year period. A total of 3176 patient records were reviewed.
RESULTS: None of the children had a malignancy, while three adult patients had a malignancy; however, all three adult patients had undergone tonsillectomy on the suspicion of malignancy.
CONCLUSION: Routine histopathological evaluation of tonsillectomy specimens may be unnecessary, especially in the pediatric age group. However, especially in adult patients who have
certain preoperative risk factors, a histopathologic evaluation is mandatory. This may facilitate a reduction in hospital costs.

Tonsillektomi ve adenotonsillektomi örneklerinin histopatolojik incelemesi: Üç yıllık takip sonuçlarımız

AMAÇ: Tonsillektomi ve adenotonsillektomi, özellikle çocukluk yaş grubunda en çok uygulanan cerrahi girişimlerden biridir. Bu çalışmada, tonsillektomi ve adenotonsillektomi örneklerinin histopatolojik sonuçları değerlendirildi.
YÖNTEMLER: Kliniğimizde 3 yıl içerisinde uygulanan çocukluk ve erişkin yaş grubu tonsillektomi ve adenotonsillektomi örneklerinin histopatolojik sonuçları retrospektif olarak incelendi. Toplam 3176 hasta kaydı değerlendirildi.
BULGULAR: Çocuk hastalarda maligniteye rastlanmazken 3 erişkin hastada malignite saptandı. Ancak histopatolojik olarak malignite saptanan 3 erişkin hastanın hepsinde de tonsillektomi malignite şüphesi nedeni ile yapılmıştı.
SONUÇ: Pediatrik yaş grubunda rutin histopatolojik inceleme gerekli olmayabilir, ancak ameliyat öncesi risk faktörü olan, özellikle erişkin hastalarda histopatolojik inceleme mutlaka yapılmalıdır. Bu durum hastane maliyetini de azaltabilir.
